With all that our country has been through in the last few weeks, we know self-care is more important now than ever before. Daily routines are a fundamental part of who we are, and when they get so wholly disrupted, we can feel the negative impacts. Fortunately, we also have the power to recognize these negative impacts and take positive steps for ourselves by creating a new set of healthy routines.
Here are three clinically-supported routine tips for improving your physical and mental wellness from home:
Maintain your normal sleep patterns
If you typically wake up at 6 a.m. and go to sleep at 10 p.m., now’s the time to deliberately keep it up, even if you’re working remotely and no longer need to factor in a commute or other errands. Healthy sleep hygiene depends on regularity, so if your body is used to a certain sleeping schedule, it’s best for you to stick with it. In general, sleep should be a big priority right now, during times of stress and anxious thoughts, because it’s our body’s time to reset and refuel, so to speak. Studies show that sleep deprivation puts us at risk for disease and depression, so take special care to get your z’s!
It’s normal to feel frustrated that you can’t go to your gym or yoga studio like you normally would. If you’re accustomed to working out, start an exercise routine that you can do anywhere. While group workouts aren’t currently an option, you can take up jogging, walking or biking. Yoga is another wellness activity that can be done at home, indoors or outdoors. In place of weight lifting, try exercises that use your own body weight in challenging ways such as planks, squats, pushups and situps.
Adjust your expectations accordingly
No matter what you decide to do, remember to go easy on yourself. For example, now may not be the best time to take up a new diet or weight loss competition. If you were working on getting your body in shape for beach season, for another example, give yourself a pass on “perfection.” There’s no such thing, anyway!
