With Thanksgiving and the last months of 2020 upon us, many of us feel compelled to reflect on this challenging year. Though it’s officially a time of giving thanks — and we’re aware of all the health benefits of gratitude — we also know that a lot of us have been struggling to feel gratitude in recent months. If you feel like gratitude isn’t your strong suit, take heart. According to neuroscience research, some people are more inclined to feel grateful than others, so it’s not your fault. Fortunately, you can change your brain and build your gratitude muscle, so to speak!

Tip #1: Start a gratitude journal.
You don’t need to write a novel. Your journal can be a simple list of all the things and reasons for which you are grateful as they occur to you.
Your list could look something like this:

My dog Charlie
Ice cream sundaes

It’s such a simple practice, jotting down things you love, but the benefits are rather astounding. A 2017 analysis of 38 gratitude studies concluded that “gratitude interventions” can boost well-being, happiness and life satisfaction. Other neuroscience research indicates that simple gratitude interventions like journaling can produce lasting brain changes.
Tip #2: Fake it til you make it.
Think of all the ways we see people expressing their gratitude out in the world: smiling, saying thanks, opening doors for one another. Even if you’re not feeling particularly thankful, you can still act the part by practicing acts of kindness. Acting thankful helps you feel more thankful, and that’s a clinically supported statement!
Tip #3: Think small.
Gratitude doesn’t need to be reserved for only the big things in life, like your vacation, house, job or car. Feeling more gratitude in life is easier when we can appreciate all the little things! There’s nothing too small to be grateful for!
