We’re talking about keeping your skin healthy and smooth all winter long. With the winter comes dry air, cold winds and indoor heating. This type of environment contributes to moisture loss in the air and to your skin. Some common signs of dry skin include flakiness, redness, rough texture, itchiness and more. We know how important it is to support your skin barrier in the colder weather, so we’ve compiled a list of tips to help keep the moisture locked in and dryness locked out!
#1: Moisturize immediately after washing.
There’s no better way to protect your skin’s moisture barrier than to moisturize any time you wash your hands, face or body. Washing strips your skin of its natural oils, which help seal in moisture. For the winter, we recommend switching to a heavier cream or ointment (as opposed to a light lotion), to better hydrate and protect your skin barrier. A helpful reminder: Keep a bottle of moisturizer by your sink and a travel-size bottle in your car or purse when you’re on the go.
#2: Simplify your skin care.
If you’re already prone to dry skin in the winter, certain skin care products can cause further irritation, so it’s important to know what your skin can and cannot handle. You may find simplifying your routine with a gentle cleanser, sunscreen and moisturizer works best keeping your skin healthy and smooth without drying it out. Refrain from using exfoliating products or skin care with any of the following drying ingredients: alcohol, alpha-hydroxy acid (AHA), fragrance and retinoids. Still not sure which skin care products will treat your skin the best? Semblance Medspa proudly carries an array of medical-grade skin care lines, including SkinMedica® and SkinCeuticals®, for you to choose from!
#3: Use a humidifier.
With the low temperatures we can experience in the winter, it’s no doubt you’ll be tempted to crank up the heat. While you’re warm and toasty indoors, remember to replenish the air with the moisture it’s been deprived of. Invest in a humidifier to add moisture back into the air and prevent and relieve dry skin. Try installing a humidifier in the main rooms of your home such as your bedroom, living room, office space, etc.
#4: Dial down the temperature.
A hot shower or bath on those chilly winter days can be a soothing, relaxing experience. But, to keep your skin well nourished, you’ll want to spend less time bathing and keep the water temperature closer to lukewarm. Hot water, especially for a long period of time, can strip your skin of its moisture faster than lukewarm water. And after bathing, use a soft towel to gently pat your skin, and don’t forget to moisturize for optimal skin protection!
#5: Bundle up!
This won’t just keep you warm, it’ll also protect your skin against the harsh winter elements that can dry it out. Gloves, scarves, hats, whatever protective winter gear you have, all work great to shield exposed skin like your hands, neck, ears and face from redness and irritation. Next time you step out into the cold, put on your most comfortable winter clothing, and make sure it’s kind to your skin. Fabrics like wool can irritate your skin, so opt for loose, nonirritating clothing. If you have extra sensitive skin, wash your clothes with detergents free of harsh chemicals and fragrances.
